    Geologist I - Long-Term Contractual; Full-Time - Two (2) Vacancies

    MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB: Data collection and processing for Bay Bottom habitat mapping project. Data collection will consist of side scan sonar, sub-bottom seismic, swath bathymetry, sound velocity probes, marine magnetometer systems, sediment samplers, and gravity corers operated from various survey vessels in the Maryland Chesapeake Bay, lakes, and reservoirs. Assist senior scientists in the interpretation and analysis of the data. Assemble geologic data sets to include data conversion, GIS geodatabase creation, assist with GIS map products. Assist senior geologists in interpretation of these data, in support of scientific studies. Assist in final reports summarizing interpretations and results.

    POSITION DUTIES: The Department of Natural Resources – Maryland Geological Survey is seeking to fill 2 long-term contractual positions at the Geologist I level. The successful applicants will carry out several primary anddiverse functions focused on the data collection and processing for the Bay Bottom habitat mapping project. Data collection will consist of side scan sonar, sub-bottom seismic, swath bathymetry, sound velocity probes, marine magnetometer systems, sediment samplers, and gravity corers operated from various survey vessels in the Maryland Chesapeake Bay, lakes, and reservoirs.

    Tasks include operation of sampling equipment and acoustic survey systems, coring, grab sampling, GPS survey equipment and data loggers. These positions will also include travel within the State of Maryland and occasional overnight stays. Processing will consist of assisting senior scientists in the interpretation and analysis of the data, assembly of geologic seabed datasets to include data conversion, GIS geodatabase creation, and assistance with GIS map products. The successful applicants will also assist in final reports summarizing the interpretations and results.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Education: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology, or a related earth science.
    Experience: None.
